Great War Salvo! 3rd ed.

Great War Salvo! 3rd Edition is a strategy, solitaire, tactical naval wargame that enables players to recreate early World War I naval battles between individual British and German warships on the table top.  This is the new, latest edition of this game system. (For those owning the 2nd ed., see below for what's new in this edition.)

The game consists an illustrated, color 52-page rule book that contains all rules and game components (warship sheets 1 through 9, A, B, & C rendered in color at 1/6000 scale; game markers; Reference Card; historical scenarios, and designer's notes  The warship counters (336 in all, BB, BC, B, AC, CL, AMC types), are rated in a variety of offensive and defensive categories, allowing players can assess at a glance the relative strengths and weaknesses of each ship.  Ships from Great Britain, Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Russia, Turkey, the United States, Japan, Spain, Sweden, and the Netherlands are included.  (Also included at no charge is a copy of the GWS! 3rd ed. Component Set... copies of all twelve ship counter sheets and Reference Card.)

Great War Salvo! is primarily a ship vs ship solitaire game, but rules are included for two-player as well as solitaire play, with one ship or multiple ships on a side.  The rule book contains all standard and optional rules needed to play, game tables, fourteen scenarios, and Designer's Notes.

With the launch of HMS Dreadnought in 1906, warship construction was revolutionized. Great powers competed to complete fleets of the new design. With the arrival of the Great War, Great Britain and Germany possessed the largest battle fleets among the antagonists, and armed encounters were soon taking place around the world:  Coronel... the Falklands... Emden vs Sydney... Heligoland Bight... the flight of the Goeben... Dogger Bank... hypothetical encounters in the Adriatic, and more. Great War Salvo! enables you to refight these historical battles as well as hypothetical ones in a variety of settings, all the while emphasizing the Minden design emphasis of playability and historicity.

What's new in the 3rd edition:  This is an enlarged edition, similar to the 2nd ed. except adding the long-awaited Mediterranean counter sheets (#3 and #4), an additional counter sheet of British ships (#9), and a new Additional Ship sheet (C).  In addition, new optional rules and scenarios have been provided, all now in a full-color book.  (Upgrade Set: If you own GWS! 2nd ed. and wish to purchase only the new chip counter sheets, you may buy the GWS! 3rd ed. upgrade set, available separately.  Note that this contains only the four new counters sheets; no rules or new scenarios are included.)

Published in 2019, Great War Salvo! 3rd ed. is now available in PDF format.  This is the definitive version of this popular World War I solitaire naval game, and is sure to delight naval gamers of all stripes.  Designed by Gary Graber.  Published by Minden Games.

On the Straddle Table where it says "Subtract Armor rating" I assume for the weak ships with a +armor value (eg CL or AMC of +2) that means to ADD that value, since Bs and BBs all have good negative ratings such as -3 or -4 and subtract makes sense for them.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
